Neuroaffirming supports through the lens of matrescence

border line

The transition to motherhood is HUGE. Not only do you need to learn many new skills (how on earth do I be a parent?), you undergo a complete transformation as a woman.

Have you heard of MATRESCENCE?

Matrescence is the complete transformation and identity shift of a woman as she moves through motherhood - psychological, social, emotional, physical, economic, cultural and spiritual (Amy Taylor-Kabbaz 2022).

Matrescence, like adolescence, is often a long and bumpy ride. It’s generally expected and accepted that teenagers go through a period of emotional instability as they transition from child to adult. Whereas for women, it’s expected that they adjust to motherhood overnight. I don’t stand for this. Women need support as they go through the transition from woman to mother which begins the moment they consider having a baby and arguably, lasts forever.

And if you have a highly sensitive or neurodivergent child it's even more essential that you have support to navigate a motherhood journey that likely looks pretty different to how you imagined.

hI I'M NICOLE,

Whether you’re just beginning your matrescence journey or several children in, I’m here to support you on your journey.

I have 20 years experience as a registered Occupational Therapist and I'm a Matrescence Coach (or Mother Cheerleader, as some say:) ).

I've always been passionate about supporting families, especially those who face the challenge of parenting children with additional needs. But becoming a mother myself deepened that passion and confirmed for me that the most effective way to help a child is through supporting their mother or care giver.

I'm a mother of three girls - 9, 7 and 2. I am autistic myself and have lived experience of parenting neurodivergent children. I also know what it's like to be in complete overwhelm trying to juggle the competing demands of motherhood and career.

I've been on a journey to redefine what it is to be a woman and mother for myself and love holding space for parents and caregivers to do the same.

Mother and Son

Why work with me?

Whether you're right at the beginning of your matrescence journey or several years into it, I can support you to reconnect to yourself as a woman and overcome day-to-day challenges as a mother.

My style of occupational therapy is a little different to the traditional approach where the therapist offers advice in solution to your problems. As a motherhood coach my role is to support you to connect to what really matters for you, and to walk with you as you come up with solutions that really feel right for you.

I may be the therapist for you if:

  • You know there's a better way to manage the competing demands of womanhood and motherhood and need some help to navigate what that could look like for you;
  • You're struggling with the pressure of parenting a highly sensitive or neurodivergent child amongst the chaos of life;
  • You're feeling exhausted trying to juggle IT ALL and want to get your energy back;
  • You know you're meant to prioritise 'self-care', but you just don't know how to fit it in.
